Tuesday, December 2, 2008, 05:45 PM EST [Bengals]

A couple of other things that may have been lost in today's UC news.

    * Lamonte Nelms, who was arrested this weekend, will be on the trip to Hawaii this weekend.

    * Big East refs will be calling the game on Saturday.

    * Games at Paul Brown Stadium in the future aren't out of the question, even with an expanded Nippert Stadium.

    Loading up the Tribute jet

Tuesday, December 2, 2008, 05:45 PM EST [Tribute to the Troops]

Hello, this is Michael Cole, aboard a C-17 cargo jet, along with 62 WWE personnel, that includes technical crew and WWE Superstars at Andrews Air Force Base, ready to take off for our annual Tribute to the Troops.

This cargo plane (seen above) holds 110,000 lbs. of cargo. We have 80,000 pounds of equipment loaded for this trip. For the first time ever, the troops, when they see our show, will get the total WWE television TV experience. Because, for the first time ever, we are bringing a high-definition TitanTron and LED, or video board.

WWE personnel took months creating and engineering this very special TitanTron so that it would work in desert conditions, including in the sand in the desert. It is the first HD TitanTron that we’ve ever brought to Iraq – and the first-ever HD TitanTron that will ever be used in an entertainment show in a war zone.

Our main goal this year is to entertain the troops, to give them the full WWE experience. The troops this year will be entertained this year with video packages and entrance videos. They’ll feel like they really are at a Monday Night Raw or a WWE TV event, and really feel like there are part of the show that will air on NBC the Saturday before Christmas.

Of course, there’s the ring, the turnbuckles, the ropes, microphones, television equipment and cameras … everything that will make this experience the best it can be.

And we will actually set up this arena in the middle of a desert, to entertain our troops while we’re over there for our sixth-annual Tribute to the Troops.

Editor's Note: The preceeding was transcribed from audio dispatches from the WWE's Tribute to the Troops mission. For complete coverage of Tribute to the Troops, visit the Tribute section on WWE.com. Also, Leave your holiday messages for the troops in the Forums on WWE Universe.

    Starting Tomorrow: NO OVERTIME

Tuesday, December 2, 2008, 04:40 PM CST [General]

When I got back to the PO today after finishing my route, my TWO supervisors, who were sitting at a desk doing I don't know what, told me that starting tomorrow all carriers would start coming in thirty minutes later. Oh, also that starting tomorrow there will be NO OVERTIME. Starting tomorrow, any carrier that uses overtime will be looking for a new job - "I'll see to that" - said the 204b, light duty supervisor. Then she went on and on about "Yeah, carriers will not be working anymore overtime, all carriers will be back in 8 hours, and any that don't come back will be looking for another job, I'll see to that." Well, today and everyday for many months, we've had a lot of mail at my PO and most carriers are working overtime on a daily basis. In fact, it was just me and carrier Randy who made it back in 8 hours today. I asked the supervisor about all the carriers that use overtime everyday. She said, "they will be looking for new jobs if they use overtime starting tomorrow." So I said, me and Randy will be the only ones working after tomorrow if the same thing happens?" "Any carrier that works overtime tomorrow will be looking for another job." The other supervisor, who was sitting at the desk eating a snack, said "yeah, we just had a telecon and the economy is real bad and all these businesses are closing. There's a whole list in an email of all the businesses that are closing. JC Penny, Linens and Things and a whole lot of others. And we're not going to have any more mail." Wow, I thought, all this is starting tomorrow?

Anyway, just a note about the supervisors. One, the promoted one, has never carried mail before and I think she is new at the post office. The other one is a 204b light duty carrier who had carpal tunnel in both hands who is now trying her hand at supervising. (According to carriers she worked with, she wasn't the best carrier.) She's a bad a@@, so she thinks. After our amusing conversation about no more overtime, a limited duty carrier came back to the station. According to Ms. Bad@@ the carrier had taken too long. She told him "he was stealing" and that "he wasn't going to be stealing as long as she was supervising." He said that he disagreed. She kept on and on, over and over talking about how he was stealing from the post office. He walked away, towards me, very upset. I told him not to let her get to him, that she was a fill-in light duty 204b, and that he (the carrier) had done a lot more work today than the supervisor.

I diatribe for two reasons. First. Where the hell are we getting all these light-duty supervisors? At my station, we've had more than I can count. The last one, who is rumored to be coming back, was booted out of the ASP program and told a carrier in confidence that he has a 15% disability for schizophrenia. Our latest is Ms. Bad A@@, who by all appearances, will be going straight to hell for her maltreatment of employees. Second. Where the hell is our union? I have never seen the workplace environment so bad. Basically, management is using the economy, and the pre-funding accounting gimmick, to tell carriers they'll have to quit stealing from the post office or the entire USPS is going under. Our local union can only do so much. I'm hoping that national NALC, APWU and others can organize a day of protest or something to call attention to the inhumane treatment that postal employees are receiving from a supervisory corps that has gone to hell. (As for the supervisory corps, I hope to have a piece soon about how the ASP program has failed, at least in my area, and produced a system where no moral person will ever contemplate joining the managerial ranks.)

    Update

    Tuesday, December 2, 2008, 07:40 PM [General]

Thanks to everyone for their support and kindness through a difficult time. Things are in the process of working through. I am praying for patience and peace. I am trying to be grateful for the things I have today, not what I may not have or lose. I am safe here on this site, for I think the anonymity is here. Everyone has reached out to me and I feel better. Although things might now go my way, I will stay on this site, because this is home and a confortable place to share and support others too. So, forgive me for the venting I did last night and help me to heal as you all have all along!! God Bless!! Faith

Not time for foreigners to leave India. Yet.

Tuesday, December 2, 2008, 10:34 PM GMT [General]

Apologies for being absent these last few days, but my work time has been taken up with events in Mumbai.

Putting journalism aside, I was speaking on a personal level to an American friend in New Delhi the other day who, when asked 'how's it going' replied, 'Okay...I suppose. Everyone's just very sad about what's happened'.

That might sound sentimental or mawkish as a written quote, but it was spoken in a heartfelt manner. It then struck me that for foreigners living in India particularly, these attacks have amounted to a loss of innocence.

Terrorism has always been theoretical threat in India (which moved close in September with the Delhi bombings) but the Mumbai attacks seem to have announced that the global jihadi franchise [New York-Kabul-Baghdad] really has opened a new outlet in India.

For anyone who has lived in India and loves India, it's hard to describe how depressing that is. My friend was right to use the word 'sad'. It is. Life for foreigners in Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore, will involve more than a certain amount of looking over one's shoulder now, which is exactly as the terrorists intended.

Given the massive wealth disparities, India has always been a wonderfully safe place to live for foreigners.  No car-jackings, few break-ins and very little violent crime compared with similar sized cities.

As a reporter you could wander the shanties of Mumbai or the poorest villages without ever fearing for wallets or mobile phones. How many such places could you say that of in the big cities of the developing world in South Africa or Latin America, or for that matter, Europe and the US?

The Mumbai attacks haven't changed any of that - and life, as in the past, will and must go on - but from what I've been hearing, these attacks have succeeded (understandably) in putting the expatriate community in cities like Delhi and Mumbai seriously on edge.

History says that these fears should fade, but only if the Indian security establishment can prevent another similar attack occurring in the next few months.

If they don't I can see the foreign communities in India (tourists, businessmen, diplomats) which are already jittery, getting very spooked indeed.

And unlike 99 per cent of ordinary Indians who must live with, and defy, this new menace, the foreigners can always get on a plane and leave.
